Prayer of Thanksgiving: The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Prayers of the People
We praise you, living God,with songs and prayers and listening hearts and lives trying to obey your will.

You have created and are creating, bringing life, hope and love.
You come in Jesus, your Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new.
We praise you, living God,with songs and prayers and listening hearts and lives trying to obey your will.

In a culture where the power death gets all the headlines your Holy Spirit summons us to be people shaped by your power to work resurrection.
We praise you, living God,with songs and prayers and listening hearts and lives trying to obey your will.

We are not sure we believe as fully as we think we should.
We are not sure we trust as deeply as we think you require.
But we bring who we are and what we have become into your presence, longing to know your grace and your love.
We praise you, living God,with songs and prayers and listening hearts and lives trying to obey your will.

 Forgive what has gone wrong.
Repair in us what is broken.
Reveal in us what is good and turn us toward it.
We praise you, living God,with songs and prayers and listening hearts and lives trying to obey your will.

So may we follow wherever your Spirit may lead.
So may we love with the love of Jesus flowing through us.
So may we, body, mind and spirit,
be children of resurrection, children of hope, children of grace.
We praise you, living God,with songs and prayers and listening hearts and lives trying to obey your will.

In Christ Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Welcome

Musical Meditation:

Focus: Romans 6:3-11 So what do we do? Keep on sinning so God can keep on forgiving? I should hope not! If we’ve left the country where sin is sovereign, how can we still live in our old house there? Or didn’t you realize we packed up and left there for good? That is what happened in baptism. When we went under the water, we left the old country of sin behind; when we came up out of the water, we entered into the new country of grace—a new life in a new land!

 That’s what baptism into the life of Jesus means. When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus. Each of us is raised into a light-filled world by our Father so that we can see where we’re going in our new grace-sovereign country.

Could it be any clearer? Our old way of life was nailed to the cross with Christ, a decisive end to that sin-miserable life—no longer captive to sin’s demands! What we believe is this: If we get included in Christ’s sin-conquering death, we also get included in his life-saving resurrection. We know that when Jesus was raised from the dead it was a signal of the end of death-as-the-end. Never again will death have the last word.

When Jesus died, he took sin down with him, but alive he brings God down to us. From now on, think of it this way: Sin speaks a dead language that means nothing to you; God speaks your mother tongue, and you hang on every word. You are dead to sin and alive to God. That’s what Jesus did.

A Time for Hallelujah

Scripture: John 20:1-18
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”

Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in.

Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”

When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

Scripture: Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    for his steadfast love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    those he redeemed from trouble
And gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.

Some were sick through their sinful ways,
    and because of their iniquities endured affliction;
They loathed any kind of food,
    and they drew near to the gates of death.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he saved them from their distress;
He sent out his word and healed them,
    and delivered them from destruction.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wonderful works to humankind.
And let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices,
    and tell of his deeds with songs of joy.

Prayers of the People (From Psalm 19)

O God, the heavens are telling of your glory;
and the firmament proclaims your handiwork.
We look to the mountains and see the everlasting…

Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.
We search both day and night and watch for your glory in them…

Where there is no speech, nor are there words;
Where the voices of creation are not heard by our ears;
We listen to the silence and hear wonder speak of you…

Yet their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
We look to the horizon to hear a word about eternity…

In the heavens, God, you have set a tent for the sun,
which comes out like a beloved from a wedding canopy,
and like a strong athlete runs its course with joy.
We look to the sunrise and enjoy your forever-promise…

Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them;
and nothing is hid from its heat.
We look to the seasons and live by your rhythm…

Your law, O God, is perfect, reviving our souls;
Your decrees are sure, making wise the simple;
We look to creation’s order and accept your wisdom…

Your precepts, O God, are right, rejoicing our hearts;
Your commandment is clear,
enlightening our eyes;
We look to justice and truth and feel your light…

You inspire awe and respect, pure and enduring;
Your ordinances are true
and righteous altogether.
We look to your word and recognize your call…

More to be desired are your words than gold, even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb.
We look to your commandments and taste their sweetness…

Moreover by your laws are we made aware;
in keeping them there is great reward.
We look to creation’s order and know justice…

But who can detect their own errors?
Clear us from hidden faults.
We look to your grace and know your forgiveness…

Keep us well removed from insolence and those who spread it;
do not let them have dominion over us.
We look to what brings life and live by your example…

Then we shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.
We look to your covenant and know your love…

Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts
be acceptable to you, O God, our rock and our redeemer.
Amen.

In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
 like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens
 and makes its circuit to the other;
 nothing is deprived of its warmth.
The law of the Lord is perfect,
 refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
 making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
 giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
 giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is pure,
 enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
 and all of them are righteous.
They are more precious than gold,
 than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
 than honey from the honeycomb.
By them your servant is warned;
 in keeping them there is great reward.
But who can discern their own errors?
 Forgive my hidden faults.
Keep your servant also from willful sins;
 may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless,
 innocent of great transgression.
May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
 be pleasing in your sight,
 Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

I Corinthians 1:18-31
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
    and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Amen.

Prayers of the People (From Psalm 19)

O God, the heavens are telling of your glory;
and the firmament proclaims your handiwork.
We look to the mountains and see the everlasting…

Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.
We search both day and night and watch for your glory in them…

Where there is no speech, nor are there words;
Where the voices of creation are not heard by our ears;

Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them;
and nothing is hid from its heat.
We look to the seasons and live by your rhythm…

Your law, O God, is perfect, reviving our souls;
Your decrees are sure, making wise the simple;
We look to creation’s order and accept your wisdom…

Your precepts, O God, are right, rejoicing our hearts;

Your commandment is clear,
enlightening our eyes;
We look to justice and truth and feel your light…

You inspire awe and respect, pure and enduring;
Your ordinances are true
and righteous altogether.
We look to your word and recognize your call…

More to be desired are your words than gold, even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb.
We look to your commandments and taste their sweetness…

Moreover by your laws are we made aware;
in keeping them there is great reward.
We look to creation’s order and know justice…

But who can detect their own errors?
Clear us from hidden faults.
We look to your grace and know your forgiveness…

Keep us well removed from insolence and those who spread it;
do not let them have dominion over us.
We look to what brings life and live by your example…

Then we shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.
We look to your covenant and know your love…

Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts
be acceptable to you, O God, our rock and our redeemer.
Amen.
