THEME:

NOTES: Our theme hymn for this week is "Lead on, O Cloud of Presence"words by Ruth Duck, 1974, tune (LANCASHIRE) by Henry T. Smart, 1835

Lead on, O Cloud of Presence; the exodus is come;
In wilderness and desert, our tribe shall make its home.
Our bondage left behind us, new hopes within us grow,
We seek the land of promise where milk and honey flow.

Lead on, O Fiery Pillar; we follow yet with fears,
But we shall come rejoicing though joy be born of tears.
We are not lost, the wand'ring, for by your light we come,
And we are still God's people. The journey is our home.

Lead on, O God of freedom, and guide us on the way,
And help us trust the promise through struggle and delay.
We pray our sons and daughters may journey to that land
Where justice dwells with mercy and love is law's demand.

Scripture:  Isaiah 58:1-9a (9b-12)
Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments, they delight to draw near to God.

"Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?" Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high.

Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD?

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?

Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am.

If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday.

The LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in.

January 29, 2017

THEME: We might be surprised the plans God has in God's heart when it comes to the building of God's Kingdom.

NOTES:
We selected hymn number 400, "When You Do This, Remember Me" for Sunday's "Theme song/Hymn.  The words are from a poem written by David L. Edwards, a Disciples of Christ minister and musician.  throughout the lyrics of the hymn, Edwards quotes and adapts the words of Alexander Campbell.  Alexander Campbell was a 19th century church reformer whose theology and biblical study significantly shaped and founded the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Campbell realized through experience, when the church gathers around the Lord's Table, the plans God has for us and God's Kingdom become obvious and accessible to all.  When we gather as community around the table our hearts understand how the poor in spirit are blessed with the Kingdom of Heaven, how those who mourn are comforted, how the meek inherit the earth. etc.

Scripture:  Mathew 5:1-12

Blessed are the poor in spirit, the downtrodden and despairing,
They will rejoice in God’s reign forever.
Blessed are those who mourn, who are grieving
They will be comforted in God’s reign forever.
Blessed are the ones who seek justice and righteousness
They will find it in God’s reign forever.
Blessed are we when we love our neighbors and seek their needs
We will live in God’s reign forever.
Blessed are we all when we seek to serve others in God’s name.

Invocation                                                                     Unison

Patient God, you sent your son into our midst to teach us that the things, that are valued by the world are not the things on which you would build your Kingdom. We have heard these words time after time, throughout the centuries, and still we follow the world: valuing the bold over the meek, the wealthy over the poor, embracing vengeance over mercy. As we give our gifts this morning, may we affirm for ourselves and to the world what Christ taught us – who is truly blessed in your sight. In Christ’s holy name, we pray. Amen. (Matthew 5:1-12)
