THEME: Baptism of Our Lord--the Waters We Share

NOTES:

Scripture: Matthew 3:13-17
3:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him.

3:14 John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"

3:15 But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented.

3:16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.

3:17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."

Children come forward to light the candles as we share the responsive reading.

Leader:  In the beginning, God said,
People: 'Let there be light' and there was light!
Leader: We light these candles today,
People: Because God is with us in this time and in this place!

Call to Worship

Leader: Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
People: Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Leader: Ascribe to the Lord the glory of God's name,
People: Worship the Lord in holy array.
Leader: The voice of the Lord is upon the water.
People: The God of glory thunders,
           the voice of God rolls like many waters. 
Leader: The voice of God is full of majesty.
People Let us praise the name of the Lord!

Living God, when the Spirit descended on Jesus at his baptism, you revealed him as your own beloved Son. You anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Grant that we, who are baptized in his name, may keep the covenant we have made. Empower us to boldly confess the love which has saved us, in Christ our Lord, now and forever, Amen.
