NOTES:We remember the ways God has acted to love and save us in the past. Our gratitude and praise guide and shape our ministry as we remember that the power and light come from God. As humans, we experience limits and weaknesses as failings. In light of God's great love and creativity, though, we are more than capable, though still limited and frail by comparison, to shine God's light in the present and pass the light on to the future.
SCRIPTURE:Psalm 81:1-10 and 2 Corinthians 4:5-12
Sing aloud to God our strength;
shout for joy to the God of Jacob.
2 Raise a song, sound the tambourine,
the sweet lyre with the harp.
3 Blow the trumpet at the new moon,
at the full moon, on our festal day.
4 For it is a statute for Israel,
an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
5 He made it a decree in Joseph,
when he went out over[a] the land of Egypt.
I hear a voice I had not known:
6 “I relieved your[b] shoulder of the burden;
your[c] hands were freed from the basket.
7 In distress you called, and I rescued you;
I answered you in the secret place of thunder;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.Selah
8 Hear, O my people, while I admonish you;
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
9 There shall be no strange god among you;
you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
10 I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.
6 “I relieved your[b] shoulder of the burden;
your[c] hands were freed from the basket.
7 In distress you called, and I rescued you;
I answered you in the secret place of thunder;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.Selah
8 Hear, O my people, while I admonish you;
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
9 There shall be no strange god among you;
you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
10 I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.
2 Corinthians 4:5-12
5 For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. 6 For
it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has
shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of
God in the face of Jesus Christ.7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. 11 For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Praying Together
Holy God, we thank you for the people who help us get through tough times:
For the child who senses a parent’s need to laugh,
For the parent who knows when a hug is needed more than a lecture,
For friends who sense what we need to get going again,
For teachers who help us move out into unfamiliar territory,
For counselors who know how to listen without judging,
For those who pray for us without telling us.
For all the ways you reach us and for all the people who are part of the process, we lift our voices in grateful praise.
We turn our hearts to the children of our world. We see too much suffering. We want to hold them tenderly and wipe away their tears, but out arms cannot embrace them all and their tears become floods that threaten to wash us all away.
For children born into war and children born in peace.
For children lost in the shuffle when families fall apart.
For fearful children and for children who feel safe and secure.
For children surviving their parents’ drug addiction.
For lonely children and for children surrounded by loving family.
For children living in refugee camps.
For all children, but especially for those who fall through the cracks of our best plans, systems and strategies.
To say that we can pray for them all seems so inadequate. Yet pray we will, believing that just as surely as our prayers leave our hearts for your heart, O God, the loving power of your Holy Spirit is moving in our lives to make space for change.
By your power, may the children of our world experience your presence, comforting, empowering, encouraging, enlightening. May all who work for their welfare see doors opened by your grace and new opportunities to make life better for these children, who hold our future in their hearts and hands.
The commitment of early Christians to love and reconciliation tests us again today. Call us back from the easy places to which we have strayed. Strengthen our weak knees and send us back into the world with a new sense of hopeful purpose. So, when the night falls and our day is done, you may be able to say of us, as you said of those early disciples: They kept the faith.
This we pray through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
