NOTES:
Scripture: Psalm 118:19-29 & Luke 19:28-40
Psalm 118:19-29
Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. 22 The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. 23 This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.[a] 25 Save us, we beseech you, O Lord! O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!
26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord. 27 The Lord is God, and he has given us light. Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of the altar.
28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God, I will extol you.
29 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.
Luke 19:28-40
28 After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
29 When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’” 32 So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “The Lord needs it.” 35 Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, 38 saying,
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!”
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”

Call to Worship
Leader: Ride on Lord Jesus. Upon a colt, over cloaks, under branches.
People: Towards a city, through its gates, past the crowds – ride on Lord Jesus.
Leader: Ride on, Lord Jesus, as Hosannas fade and enemies sneer,
as danger closes and friends falter.
People: Showing the way, teaching the truth, bringing life for all. In the name of the Lord –
ride on Lord Jesus.

Prayer of Awareness
God, we gather on this day to begin a week of contrasts.
From hope to despair to hope again.
As we begin the week, as we join with the crowd
help us cut through the noise to see what is happening,
to see what is at stake.
As the story unfolds, open us to both the hope and the pain.
In this time of worship, prepare us to celebrate, to weep, and to wait.
We pray in the name of the one who leads the parade
as we share the meal he shared with his closest friends. Amen.

ScripturePalm Processional
Litany: Let the Stones Remain Silent
(inspired by Luke 19:39-40)
may we remain here
to whisper our hosannas
throughout this week
in every moment
when the world goes silent
on the cause of God
may we remain
crying out the beat
the hosanna beat
that marks the rhythm
of this week
in the sound of the breaking bread
hear the broken hosanna
still we believe in love’s way
in the sound of coins being counted
hear the betrayed hosanna
still we trust in love’s choice
in the twisting of the crown of thorns
hear the tortured hosanna
still we believe in love’s way
in the sound of the lashes, all thirty-nine
hear the scourged hosanna
still we trust in love’s choice
in the sound of nails being hammered
hear the crucified hosanna
still we believe in love’s way
in the sound of silence
hear the empty hosanna
still we trust in love’s choice
may we remain here
to whisper our hosannas
throughout this week
in every moment
may we remain with you
O Jesus
still believing
still following
still your companions
and let the stones remain silent

Palm Sunday Prayer
Jesus, you set your face towards Jerusalem
and walked alongside those who suffer.
Be our vision,
that we too may walk the way of compassion
and extend a hand to those we meet.
Leader: Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and in your love, answer.
Lord, you stopped to heal the sick
and tend to those broken in body, mind or spirit.
Be our vision,
that we too may be a source of healing to all in need of your grace.
Leader: Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and in your love, answer.
Jesus, you said,
“The first shall be last and the last first.”
Be our vision,
that we too may work towards your realm –
when the marginalized and oppressed will be raised up
and know that they are indeed beloved children of the Holy.
Leader: Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and in your love, answer.
Jesus, you took the time to pray and to be silent.
Be our vision,
that through our prayers, meditation and reflection
we may draw closer to you and find our way on this journey of faith.
Leader: Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and in your love, answer.
Lord, you entered Jerusalem with peace in your heart.
Be our vision,
that we too can live as people of peace
in the face of the world’s many conflicts.
May we hold your vision of justice and peace ever before us.
Leader: Lord, hear our prayer,
People: and in your love, answer.
Bless us, O Blessed One,
as we enter into the days ahead of us.
We will need your power and presence to sustain us
as we move through these difficult days together.
Spirit of Love and Life, stay close.
These and all the prayers of our hearts we offer in faith,
as in your name we pray, Amen.
