NOTES:This week, we return to the story ABraham and the covenant God established with him. From this source, we consider our own relationship with God. How does the covenant motivate our faith today? What does it mean for us to "be God's people" and live so God can "be our God"?
SCRIPTURE: Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, “I am God Almighty;[a] walk before me, and be blameless. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous.” 3 Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. 5 No longer shall your name be Abram,[b] but your name shall be Abraham;[c] for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring[d] after you.
15 God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”

Creator of the
nations, your bold covenant with Abraham and Sarah is still being kept.
Help us walk before you, grateful to be recipients of your faithful
promises.
The day of the Lord is coming: He abounds in steadfast love.
Lord God, you do not
despise the laments of those in dire need. You promise that the poor
shall eat and be satisfied, and the yet unborn will proclaim your mercy.
The day of the Lord is coming: He abounds in steadfast love.
Holy Spirit, you turn
our hearts toward faith as the means by which we know we are your
children. Keep us from wavering in our trust in Jesus, who was handed
over to death for us, and raised for our justification.
The day of the Lord is coming: He abounds in steadfast love.
Lord Jesus Christ,
like Peter, not knowing how formidable are our enemies, we would spare
you and ourselves from suffering. Nevertheless, by your cross and
passion you have defeated sin, death and the devil.
The day of the Lord is coming: He abounds in steadfast love.
Heavenly Father, you
so loved the world that your gave your only Son. It is the singular gift
beyond all others...your divine love for us. Hear our prayerful thank
you.
The day of the Lord is coming: He abounds in steadfast love.
Suffering among us is
always present, and we ask you to take care of those we name before you
who have special needs for your presence and healing….
The day of the Lord is coming: He abounds in steadfast love.
Though we remember we are dust and to dust we shall return, we remember that we are precious to you. We are star dust. Amen.
