November 11, 2018 Veteran's Day

THEME: Receive It and Pass It On

NOTES:When the apostle Paul talked about the Lord's Supper, he described it as something valuable and precious which he had received from God and which he had then passed on to those whom he taught and with whom he worshiped. As followers or disciples of Christ, we have a place at this table where God's love is expressed to us through the self-giving love of Jesus Christ. We, too, receive a wonderful gift and have the power and responsibility to pass it on. This week in worship, we will take a look at some of the ways our understanding of this special meal has grown and changed from the earliest Christian worship to now. We will touch on significant moments from the Protestant Reformation and the First Great Awakening on the American Frontier that impact our understanding and practice of the Lord's Supper.

SCRIPTURE: I Corinthians 11:23-26

23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Invocation (UNISON)

We give you thanks, O God our Creator,
for the life and knowledge which you have made known to us
through your Son Jesus;
yours is the glory for ever and ever.
As the grain once scattered in the fields
and the grapes once dispersed on the hillside
are now united on this table in bread and wine,
so, Lord, may your whole church soon be gathered together
from the ends of the earth into your kingdom;
for yours is the glory and power,
through Jesus Christ,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Remembrance Day Litany

Oh God, our God, your love is so great it flows into the broken places of our world. Where your love flows, Oh, God, our God, there is life and hope and healing, even in the most difficult of times. On this Veteran's Day, we remember the difficult times when nations and states raised armies against each other. And as we remember, we open ourselves to an awareness of those who have served in our armed forces, especially in war time. We offer our prayers today for our veterans and for our community, our country and ourselves as we seek to appreciate and care for the people who have so deeply cared for us.
For all who have served the cause of peace in our armed forces, we pray…
For all who have lost loved ones due to war, we pray…
For all who continue to suffer due to war, we pray…
For all who long for Your peace, we pray…
For all who dedicate their lives to Your peace, we pray…
For all who bring Your comfort to veterans and their families, we pray…
For all of us – called to be messengers of Your peace, we pray…

For all whose bodies bear the marks of war, we pray…
For all whose spirits bear the scars of war, we pray…
For all whose wounds are bound up in the prison of addictions, we pray…
For all who have not yet experienced Your healing love, we pray…
For all who rely on Your healing presence in their lives, we pray…
For all who bring Your healing to veterans and their families, we pray…
For all of us – called to be messengers of Your healing love, we pray…

For Your Gospel of comfort and peace…
For Your victory over death and promise of everlasting life…
For Your presence with us always, to the end of the age…
For Your gift of the Spirit, Who makes us whole…
For Your gift of peace, poured into our hearts at Baptism…
For Your messengers who bring us Your Good News of love and peace…
For Your call to help spread the Good News with our lives…

And now, God of love, as we prepare to go back into our everyday lives. May the awareness we have awakened here today strengthen our commitment to work for peace, true peace.  Help us remember our calling to be peacemakers at home and abroad. And may we never forget the cost that has already been paid. God of peace that surpasses all understanding, we pray our remembrances and our hopes in the name of Christ, the Prince of Peace, Amen.
