THEME:"What of the Night?"

NOTES:Our guest preacher this week will be Rev. Tanya J. Tyler.
Notes from Rev. Tyler - "My sermon "What of the Night?" is based on Isaiah 21:11-12. I've been thinking lately about how in these dark times we as followers of Christ are called to be the sentinels, the watchers, to tell people that the darkness will not last forever and the light is coming. We are called to be a tower of strength and security and welcome. That's the message I've been compelled to convey."

Bio: Rev. Tanya J. Tyler is a 2006 graduate of Lexington Theological Seminary and a 1981 graduate of Rockford College (now University) in Rockford, Ill. She was ordained in 2006 and has served churches in Burgin, Smithfield and London, Ky. and Sterling, Ill. She was the founding pastor of Chalice Christian Church, a new church start in London, Ky., that was established in 2012. She was formerly the coordinator of the Clergy Mentoring Program at LTS and is now Director of Communications for the Seminary. She was moderator of the Christian Church in Kentucky from 2008-12. She has served on the Steering Committee for the Process of Discernment of Racism in North America for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada and on the Board of Directors for Chalice Press, Christian Care Communities and the Christian Church Foundation, and also serves on the Committee on Ministry for the Christian Church in Kentucky. She previously worked in the Promotion/Advertising Creative Services department at the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper and is a freelance writer whose articles have appeared in DisciplesWorld and Just Women, as well as Chicken Soup for the Soul.  She has a son, Dan, and a daughter-in-law, Whitney, three granddogs and a puppy boy of her own named Winston. She likes to write, run and cook (but not at the same time).

SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 21:11-12

11 The oracle concerning Dumah.
One is calling to me from Seir,
    “Sentinel, what of the night?
    Sentinel, what of the night?”
12 The sentinel says:
“Morning comes, and also the night.
    If you will inquire, inquire;
    come back again.”

The Gathering
Welcome

Prelude

We Gather in The Light of Christ

Lighting the Christ Candles
Children come forward to light the candles as we share the responsive reading.

Leader:  In the beginning, God said,
People: 'Let there be light' and there was light!
Leader: We light these candles today,
People: Because God is with us in this time and in this place!

Hymn of Praise:#618 "How Firm a Foundation" (verses 1 & 2)

Call to Worship
Leader: Let us kneel in the darkness,
People: Until we see God’s light emerge.
Leader: Let us wait with hope filled hearts,
People: As Christ’s image grows within us and shows us life.
Leader: Let him speak to us and teach us love,
People: Until we open our hearts to be his home.
Leader: Let us worship God together!

Invocation (UNISON)

God of hope, we come to you in the midst of a world fraught with troubles. Although the darkness is powerful, open our eyes, Lord, to the light of your presence. Give us faith to stand against the voices of division and violence. Through your Spirit remake us into hope-filled disciples, discovering lives attune to your wonder, and sparking in others a desire to know you more. In the name of the One who comes to us, we pray, Amen.

— Rev. Nancy J, on her blog, wonderings through life and other such nonsense.

Praying Together

All thanks to you, most holy Friend,
Giver of light and love and holy joy.
Before the beginning, when space and time did not exist,
you nursed a brilliant hope for the children who were yet to be.

All thanks to you, most holy Friend,
Giver of light and love and holy joy.
In the young world, when you first raised up humankind,
you planted in them a hope that would survive their wandering and falling.

All thanks to you, most holy Friend,
Giver of light and love and holy joy.
Through the turmoil of history,
with the rise and fall of powerful nations,
you called your people to be people of hope.

All thanks to you, most holy Friend,
Giver of light and love and holy joy.
With prophets and ethical law-makers,
with poets and devout scholars,
you prepared the world for a hope-event to outstretch all others.

All thanks to you, most holy Friend,
Giver of light and love and holy joy.
And when we, your children in this time and this place,
found our place in this world,
we discovered all around us, like yeast in dough,
the energy of this Hope veined through all things.

All thanks to you, most holy Friend,
Giver of light and love and holy joy.
For the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,

All thanks to you, most holy Friend,
Giver of light and love and holy joy. Amen!
