Worship, Witness, Word and Welcome
Online Worship with First Christian Church  (Disciples of Christ) Berea, KY

Father's Day
Before we begin, gather a candle or small light, your Bible, a cross, a piece of bread and a cup of juice or water. Place them at the center of a calm area in your home and gather comfortable seating for all who will join you. Place your phone, tablet  or computer where you can see and hear it. You may want to include a photo or memento of a dad, a father, an uncle, or anyone else whose work of "fathering" you want to pray for today.

Worship
Invocation We begin with prayer.
Mighty God, who speaks a word of peace to calm our troubled sea;
Caring God, who nudges us away from fear and toward faith;
Ever-present God, who fills us with awe
   but also raises many questions without easy answers;
Open our eyes to see you in our boat—today,
Strengthen our hearts for the challenges that lie ahead,
Open our ears this hour to hear the word you speak.
This we pray, In Jesus’ name. Amen

Morning Prayer
God, our heavenly Father, each of us today has chosen someone to pray for, a father, a grandfather, an uncle, a dad, a friend, an older brother, a son...someone who does the work of fathering in this world.

Lord, we lift their names to you.

Provide for this man everything he needs,
for his spirit, soul, body, finances, and relationships.

Give him rest today;
rejuvenate him and give him the recreation that revives his life
and prepares him for the work ahead.

Renew his strength;
give him health and keep him fit for his work and his service.

Lord, we lift their names to you.

Give him the wisdom and guidance he needs
to make decisions that will profit his soul.

Provide discernment.
When he faces challenges,
may he know that he doesn’t face them alone.

Give him courage as he walks through the tough times,
knowing that you are right there with him,
protecting him and defending him.

Lord, we lift their names to you.

Bless him with the desires of his heart,
giving him joy and abundant provision.

Anoint him for the work you have given him to do,
and let him experience honor and respect in all his relationships.

Give him complete joy today,
opening his eyes to the many blessings you have given him.

Lord, we lift their names to you.

May these blessings chase him down every day of his life.
May eternal life be his and may he taste Heaven on earth.
In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Word
Scripture: Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32 & Mark 4:35-41
Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32
 For his steadfast love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    those he redeemed from trouble
    and gathered in from the lands,
     from the east and from the west,
       from the north and from the south.
Some went down to the sea in ships,
        doing business on the mighty waters;
    they saw the deeds of the Lord,
        his wondrous works in the deep.
For he commanded and raised the stormy wind,
        which lifted up the waves of the sea.
They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths;
        their courage melted away in their calamity;
    they reeled and staggered like drunkards,
        and were at their wits’ end.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
        and he brought them out from their distress;
    he made the storm be still,
        and the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad because they had quiet,
        and he brought them to their desired haven.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
        for his wonderful works to humankind.
Let them extol him in the congregation of the people,
        and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

Mark 4:35-41 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Words of Institution

Prayer of Response
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Blessing     We speak in unison.
The Light that was in one place and at one time, is now in all places and all times, for God has placed the light in us.   And we abide in peace O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
