NOTES:Today's first scripture reminds us of a sermon two weeks ago. "So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it."(Isaiah 55:11) A congregation member, Mary Bondurant, came in this week and said that she kept thinking about that until finally her mind connected it with John 1:14 "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." The Word of God goes out into the world and goes to work! And in Jesus Christ, that Word became a person whose very life was the work that God was doing. James 3 asks "Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your works..." What is God's word doing in the world through our lives today?
SCRIPTURE: John 1:14-17 and James 3:13-18
John 1:14-17
14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son,[d] full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’”) 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son,[e] who is close to the Father’s heart,[f] who has made him known.
James 3:13-18
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. 16 For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for[f] those who make peace.

Lord, you laid the earth's
foundations
while the morning stars

and all the angels shouted
for joy.
You gave orders to the
morning and showed the dawn its place;
you molded the earth until
it took shape.
You alone know the springs
of the sea;
or comprehend the
vastness of the universe;
Lord, give wisdom to our hearts
and understanding to our minds.
Amen.

O God of wisdom,
As
our children are headed back to school and college to learn anew, help
us pass on to them the wisdom that has been given down to us from the
generations before us.
Help our children as they learn their daily lessons to listen and learn.
Help their teachers have the patience and knowledge to teach well.
Help us as we guide them through those lessons.
Leader: Lord, in your wisdom.
People: Show us your way.
We ask for your wisdom to discern your ways and path for our own lives.
We
ask for your wisdom to discern how to respond with the people we live
with, work with, shop with, drive our roads, with, wait in line with,
eat with and be with daily.
We ask for your wisdom in responding to unfair, painful, stressful or distressing situations.
Leader: Lord, in your wisdom.
People: Show us your way.
We ask for wisdom for our leaders in our world, our countries, our states, and our communities.
We ask for wisdom for our church leaders, worldwide and local.
We ask for wisdom for our Pastors as they preach your word, inspire, lead and grow us as disciples.
Leader: Lord, in your wisdom.
People: Show us your way.
We ask for your wisdom as we reach out to those in need in our community in your name.
We ask for wisdom as we minister to those who are homebound and in nursing homes.
We ask for your wisdom as we minister to those in hospitals, in recovery and rehab.
Leader: Lord, in your wisdom.
People: Show us your way.
We long to walk with you boldly in your paths. We yearn to step out on faith with strength and energy. Show us that your Spirit of power flows in the paths of your will. Let the footprints that we leave be a road map to others seeking grace, peace, justice and mercy. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

One cup of blessing which we bless.

One bread, one body, one Lord of all,
One cup of blessing which we bless.
And we, though many, throughout the earth,
we are one body in this one Lord.
-- -- Many the gifts, -- -- many the works,
-- -- One in the Lord of all.
One bread, one body, one Lord of all,
One cup of blessing which we bless.
And we, though many, throughout the earth,
we are one body in this one Lord.
-- -- Grain for the fields, -- -- scattered and grown,
-- -- gathered to one, for all.
