THEME: Second Wind and the Holy Spirit

NOTES:Today we look at the spiritual gifts that build up the Body of Christ and renew its energy, motivation and enthusiasm for ministry. Our scripture from the Gospel of John does what every good mentor does. It reminds us and returns us to our core, not just of strength, but of being and identity, the Body of Christ is connected to God through Jesus Christ. Sometimes, simply remembering the way life and nourishment flows through a vine, and understanding that we are connected to God in this way, is exactly what's needed to get us underway, sailing on the winds of the Spirit, flying high!

SCRIPTURE: John 15:1-10

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. 2 He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3 You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

Colossians 2:6-7
6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives[b] in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Call to Worship
Leader: Jesus said, "If you are tired from carrying heavy burdens,
come to me and I will give you rest"
People: As we worship today, we will take the yoke of Jesus,

put it on our shoulders and learn from Christ's example.
Leader: Jesus said, "I am gentle and humble, and you will find rest.
This yoke is easy to bear, and this burden is light."
People: Let us worship in Spirit and truth.

To rest from the things that are troubling us

Praying Together
For all the blessings of this life,
we give thanks to You, Creator God.
For families, friends, colleagues, neighbors, and strangers,
who nurture us, that the love of God may grow within.
That Your love, your Word, like a seed,
may grow to produce in us, good fruit.

Leader:May your love be like a seed,
People: Taking root and growing strong.
For the leaders of various nations and cities,
that they may lead with strong hearts and gentle hands and generous spirits,
with compassion and mercy, with wisdom and grace.
May they reflect your will guiding all their actions and decisions.

Leader:May your love be like a seed,
People: Taking root and growing strong.
For those who serve in harms way,
those who live in dangerous places,
those who live in areas of war and strife,
those who live in fear,
those who worry about employment, bills, food,
and struggle just to find dignity in life.
May your grace bring peace and safety to all people, one to another.

Leader:May your love be like a seed,
People: Taking root and growing strong.
For those who suffer from any illness or dis-ease—
of mind, body, or spirit.
Restore these, and all those we carry in our hearts, to fullness of health—
health as only you, O God, can bring.

For those who are dying, and for those who have died.
Send forth your comforting love.
Give solace to those who mourn.
Console those who grieve.
May your mercy shower each of us with healing mercy and love.

Leader:May your love be like a seed,
People: Taking root and growing strong.

May your grace surround us
like a mantle upon our heads,
a shawl upon our shoulders,
a hand, to hold our hand. In Jesus' name we pray,
Amen.
