THEME:What Are We Saying When We Pray?

NOTES: Prayer is a key aspect of our relationship with God. The practice of talking and listening to God was as challenging to the first disciples as it is to us today. Yet Jesus must have made it look easy. So they asked him to show them how. And he did. Long before our gospel story, the Psalmists were already crafting prayers that touch the full range of human emotion. What are we saying to God? What are we hearing from God? How are we cultivating, nourishing and equipping minds and hearts that are open to this conversation? And are our responses the same or do they differ if we consider our congregational prayer life (in and out of worship)?

Scripture: Luke 11:1-13 and Psalm 85

Luke 11:1-13
He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Father, hallowed be your name.
 Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
 And forgive us our sins,
 for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not bring us to the time of trial.”

And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.’  And he answers from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.
“So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.  Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish?  Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion?  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Psalm 85
Lord, you were favorable to your land;
    you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2 You forgave the iniquity of your people;
    you pardoned all their sin.Selah
3 You withdrew all your wrath;
    you turned from your hot anger.
4 Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
    and put away your indignation toward us.
5 Will you be angry with us forever?
    Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
6 Will you not revive us again,
    so that your people may rejoice in you?
7 Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.
8 Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will speak peace to his people,
    to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
9 Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him,
    that his glory may dwell in our land.
10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
    righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground,
    and righteousness will look down from the sky.
12 The Lord will give what is good,
    and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him,
    and will make a path for his steps.

Invocation
O Lord, be gracious to us.
Speak your word to us—
a word of peace to those who follow faithfully.
For we know, without doubt, that Your salvation is near;
your glory fills this place.

Let your unfailing love and truth come together among us;
let your righteousness and peace surround us.
Pour out your goodness upon us,
that we may worship and serve you all our days.
Amen.

Praying Together      (inspired by Matthew 11: 28-30)

Ever-present God, you journey with us. We see your creation and we know your wisdom. We feel your breath and we know your Spirit. We remember Jesus Christ and we know your great love.

In times of weakness and hour of need,
yours is the strength by which we carry on,
the shoulder we rest our head upon.

In the silence of our hearts, we lift to you the moments this past week when we have needed comfort.

When our load is heavy and too much to bear,
yours are the arms stretched out to help us
the grace that we depend on.

In the silence of our hearts, we lift to you the moments this coming week when wewill need to rely on your strength.

In times of weakness and hour of need,
your voice is heard,
‘Come… find rest.’

In the silence of our hearts, we lift to you the names of people we know and situations of which we are aware, that need your comfort and strength.

This is grace divine, Holy Ever-Present God,
the path we tread to wholeness
of body and spirit,
the path that leads to you,
and for which we offer our offering of praise.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
