December 18, 2016 Advent 4 JOY

THEME: Names of Christmas - Champion of Peace

Christmas Breakfast at 9:30am. No Early Worship. 10:40 only.

Characters: Angels

Scripture:  Matthew 1:18-25
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly.

But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."

All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us."
When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

10:40AM Service

Welcome…
Welcome! This morning's service marks the third Sunday in Advent. Advent is a time for preparation. We prepare for the Advent of the Christ Child into this world and the lives we lead. Advent is experienced in the darkest time of the year. Jesus is the Light of the World and thus brings God's hope. As you settle in and prepare for this time of worship, praise and prayer, we hope the sanctuary will be a place of peace and reflection. Be at home and know that you are embraced by the spirit of those around you. Sincerely, the Worship Team, "Hymn Pickers' and Co-Pastors.

Introduction"Joy"
"Joy"
Lay reader stands behind the Advent wreath and shares the following:
Soon, we shall celebrate the birth of Jesus. We worship God with joy in our hearts as we are reminded of the words the angel said on that first Christmas Day. "Behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the  people."

 Scripture: John 15:9-11
As the father has loved me, so I have loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

We light this candle to proclaim the coming of the light of God into the world. With the coming of this light, there is joy, joy that is ours, not only at Christmas, but always.

Prayer for Joy
UNISON: O Holy One, as Christmas draws near, there is a sense of excitement in the air. We can feel a joy in our lives and it in those around us. Still for some of us, this is a sad time because of unhappy things that have happened in our lives. Help us to have the joy that does not depend on earthly happiness but on you. Help us to be filled with your joy so that we may share it with a joyless world. Amen.
