Moments of Fellowship and Greeting

Encountering God's Word

Scripture: John 6:1-13                            Reader FCC

World Communion Litany: A World of Bread

Reader 1:   Union (Video)
In ________, Israel, warm, unleavened flat bread,
maza, eaten with hummus and olives;
served with courteous formality
to guest and family alike,
stubborn hospitality outlasting
political turmoil.

Reader 2: FCC
In Australia’s outback, bush bread,
cakes made from seed
packed with nourishment, protein and carbohydrates,
which are crushed and moistened and baked
into a bread that is also called
“mother and child.”

Reader 3: Union
In Iceland, døkkt rúgbrauö, dark rye bread,
baked in the earth slowly steaming,
in the heat of hot springs,
Emerging from burial,
Crumbly, warm and filling

Reader 4: FCC
In Pheonix, Mauritius, European style baguettes
steaming from the oven of a Hindu baker,
in a dusty Muslim town,
shared with Chinese Christians,
diversity rising from the ashes of oppression.

Reader 5: Union
In Harare, Zimbabwe, balls of sadza sit,
alongside meals, barely bread, almost porridge,
corn ground to meal and boiled thick,
ready to scoop up stew,
in a café full of diners from all walks of life.

Reader 6: FCC
In Sarajevo, Bosnia, pita bread,
served with kebab
and tiny cups of strong sweet coffee,
spiced with cardamom,
a bittersweet meal at tables rebuilt
on the rubble of civil war.

Reader 7: Union
In Oaxaca, Mexico, pan de muerto,
a bread that remembers,
slightly sweet, like the life of a loved one
passed on but not forgotten;
shared in memory and respect.
