December 4, 2016 Advent 2 PEACE

THEME: Names of Christmas: Strength of God
Key Characters: The Shepherds

Scripture:  Isaiah 11:1-10
11:1 A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.

11:2 The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

11:3 His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear;

11:4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

11:5 Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins.

11:6 The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them.

11:7 The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

11:8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den.

11:9 They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

11:10 On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.

The Gathering

Welcome

Prelude

Introduction “Peace”
“Peace”
(Lay Reader stands behind the advent wreath and shares the following.)
We gather around the Advent Wreath today knowing that we are not perfect -  that we will make mistakes and we will do bad things. Only Jesus obeyed God fully. Nevertheless, Jesus helps us to live as God wants us to live. Jesus gives us peace.
 Scripture………………………………………………………………. Isaiah 9:6-7 (NIV)

6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.

Prayer for Peace

UNISON:  Eternal God, we thank you that through all the years you have given peace to your people. Help us to have your peace in our lives. We pray that, in this Advent season, we may, by what we do, show your presence to the sick, to the hungry, to the lonely, that they, too, may have peace.

10:40AM Service

Welcome…this morning’s service marks the first Sunday in Advent.  Advent is a time for preparation.   We prepare for the Advent of the Christ Child into this world and the lives we lead.  Advent is experienced in the darkest time of the year.  Jesus is  the Light of the World and thus brings God’s hope.  As you settle and prepare for this time of worship, praise and prayer, we hope the sanctuary will be a place of peace and reflection.  Be at home and know that you are embraced by the spirit of those around you.  Sincerely, Worship Team, “Hymn Pickers” & Co-Pastors

Gathering the Advent Lights

The lights in the four corners of the sanctuary symbolize the light of Hope, Peace, Love and Joy--lights that arrive in our world upon Christ’s Advent.  Individuals will bring the four lights to the child who lights the Candle of Hope on today’s Advent Wreath.  Today we focus on the Light of Hope.
